Larimar is a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite formed millions of years ago in the Dominican Republic through a combination of volcanic activity and hydrothermal action.  It develops when hot, mineral-rich fluids fill cavities in solidified basaltic lava, crystallising into fibrous structures that are coloured blue by the presence of copper.
